A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. While Nintendo Switch Online boasts a strong GBA library, this list highlights those brave enough to venture onto the Switch eShop. Ten titles are featured: four GBA and six DS.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA iteration is a solid alternative, offering a streamlined experience. A worthwhile comparison piece, and enjoyable even for those less inclined towards shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action title, while initially a bit rough around the edges, lays the groundwork for an excellent series. A great starting point for a fantastic franchise.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay. Mega Man Battle Network is an RPG with a unique action-strategy hybrid battle system. Its clever concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is fully realized. While later entries show diminishing returns, the original offers plenty of fun.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
From the Castlevania Advance Collection, Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it's even preferable to the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on occasion. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is compelling. A truly exceptional third-party GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Initially a cult classic with limited reach, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare propelled Shantae to greater fame. This title, born from the ashes of an unreleased GBA game (soon to be released!), solidified Shantae's place in gaming.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA game in its origins, Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with comedic flair. The first game is outstanding, though later installments also hold merit.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick offers a unique gameplay mechanic. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save people and unravel the mystery of your death. A captivating and underrated title.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version serves as a viable alternative for those without a DS, offering a great gameplay experience.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
From the Castlevania Dominus Collection, Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its original touch controls. However, all three DS Castlevania games in this collection are recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS systems, but this HD adaptation is a playable and worthwhile experience. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a substantial RPG.
