Back 2 Back: Couch Co-op Revitalized for Mobile

Back 2 Back: Two-Player Couch Co-op on Mobile – Can It Work?

Two Frogs Games is making a bold claim: their game, Back 2 Back, delivers couch co-op gameplay on mobile phones. In a world dominated by online multiplayer, this concept feels almost anachronistic. But can a two-player experience truly thrive on the smaller screen real estate of a mobile device?

Back 2 Back aims to capture the spirit of cooperative games like It Takes Two and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. The gameplay involves two players, each with a distinct role: one drives a vehicle through a challenging obstacle course, while the other acts as a shooter, defending against enemies. The course itself is filled with perilous environments, including cliffs and lava flows.

A Novel Approach (with Challenges)

The immediate question is: how does it actually work? The answer is somewhat unconventional. Each player uses their own phone to control their respective aspects of the shared game session. While not the most streamlined solution, it achieves the goal of local multiplayer. The smaller screen size, a common limitation of mobile gaming, is addressed (to some extent) through this multi-device approach.

Despite the unconventional setup, there's reason for optimism. The enduring appeal of local multiplayer, as evidenced by the success of games like Jackbox, suggests that the desire for in-person, shared gaming experiences remains strong. Whether Back 2 Back can successfully translate this experience to the mobile platform remains to be seen, but the concept is certainly intriguing.
