Dynasty Warriors 10 Was Canceled

Dynasty Warriors: Origins Rises from the Ashes of a Canceled Predecessor

The upcoming release of Dynasty Warriors: Origins on January 17, 2025, marks a significant moment for the franchise, but its journey to release is one marked by both innovation and sacrifice. Omega Force, the developers, recently revealed the cancellation of a planned tenth mainline installment in the series, a decision driven by technological advancements and a desire to create a more modern and strategically engaging experience.

Initially conceived as a traditional stage-clearing title reminiscent of Dynasty Warriors 7, this "phantom" tenth game was ultimately scrapped. The team, witnessing the potential of the PlayStation 5 and other next-gen consoles, recognized the opportunity to redefine the franchise's gameplay. This pivotal decision led to the birth of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, a title that retains the series' signature hack-and-slash combat within the Three Kingdoms setting but elevates it with new strategic elements.

While bittersweet, the cancellation wasn't without merit. Producer Tomohiko Sho highlighted the impact of modern console capabilities in shaping the direction of Origins. Key features from the abandoned project, such as the free-roaming map and a more in-depth narrative exploring the Three Kingdoms era, found their way into the final product. Producer Masamichi Oba emphasized the difficulty of leaving the previous project behind but expressed satisfaction in successfully integrating its best aspects into Origins. The result is a game that promises a fresh, enhanced experience for longtime fans while remaining true to the core essence of the Dynasty Warriors franchise. Deluxe Edition players have already experienced the fast-paced action, and the wider release is eagerly anticipated.
