Hogwarts Legacy Sequel to Share “Big Picture Storytelling Elements” with Harry Potter TV SeriesJ.K. Rowling Will Not be Directly Involved in Franchise Management
"We have known for some time that fans are seeking more experiences in this world, and so we’re devoting considerable time to considering that," president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment David Haddad told Variety. He stressed that a key aspect of the project is a collaborative endeavor with Warner Bros. Television to forge a unified narrative link between the game and the TV series. This signifies that although the game’s timeline is set in the 1800s—considerably earlier than the series’ time period—it will share thematic and "big-picture storytelling elements" with the new show.
A key hurdle will be preserving the game’s essence while integrating it with the highly anticipated series organically and sidestepping any contrived or unnatural connections. Given the setting disparity, it’s unclear precisely how the two storylines will span the historical divide, but fans of the series are eager to see new lore or secrets about Hogwarts and its renowned alumni that could arise from this collaboration.
Haddad is certain of one thing, however: The triumph of Hogwarts Legacy definitely spurred a revived interest in the franchise across all platforms. "The rest of the company was very curious about what we helped to unleash with ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ last year," he said.
Rowling’s controversial comments continue to affect the series, so much so that many chose to boycott Hogwarts Legacy in 2023 in protest of her transphobic statements on social media. The boycott was a statement to not support J.K. Rowling—a consumer protest, in essence. The boycott ultimately failed, however, as Hogwarts Legacy still became one of the best-selling video games of all time, surpassing even renowned titles like GTA San Andreas and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Regardless, it is confirmed that Rowling will have minimal involvement in the franchise, and fans can take comfort in the fact that none of her controversial comments will be integrated into the game or the upcoming HBO series.
