Simu Liu, the star of Marvel's Shang-Chi, is reportedly attempting to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reported Liu's response to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he's actively "working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen."
The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, was mysteriously shelved a year later. Yen recently confirmed its cancellation, citing years of effort and investment, ultimately lost to the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
Liu's intervention offers a glimmer of hope for fans of the critically acclaimed 2012 video game. The game, which follows detective Wei Shen's infiltration of a Hong Kong Triad, received widespread praise (including an 8/10 from IGN), yet never spawned a sequel. Whether Liu's efforts will secure the rights or successfully launch the film remains uncertain.
