Baldur\'s Gate 3: Should You Free Orpheus?

Authore: PenelopeUpdate:Jan 20,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a pivotal choice: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allow the Emperor to handle the situation. This decision, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, profoundly impacts the game's outcome.

Baldur's Gate 3 Orpheus Decision

Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this choice, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries significant weight; companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (30+) may be needed to influence companion choices.

(Spoilers ahead!)

Should You Free Orpheus?

This depends entirely on player preferences. Early in Act 3, the Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids. After the Netherbrain battle (within the Astral Prism), the choice is presented: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Baldur's Gate 3 Orpheus Choice

Side with the Emperor: This results in Orpheus's demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While this ensures victory over the Netherbrain, it may not appeal to all players.

Free Orpheus: Freeing Orpheus causes the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight against the Netherbrain, and will even sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers if asked.

In short, choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation, but free Orpheus if you're willing to risk it. Siding with the Emperor might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus. The choice is ultimately personal.

Moral Considerations:

The "good" choice depends on individual morality. It boils down to loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki character might naturally side with him. However, prioritizing Voss and Lae'zel's demands might seem overly self-serving. The Gith often prioritize themselves above all else.

The Emperor, on the other hand, strives to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts that sacrifice might be necessary. Following his plan might lead to Mind Flayer transformation, but it's arguably a morally sound action in a broader context. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; strategic choices can lead to a satisfying outcome for everyone.
