During Nintendo's April Direct, we got an exciting glimpse into the Switch 2, and the anticipation for preorders in the U.S. has been building ever since. The price of the new console itself wasn't a shock, but the cost of first-party Switch 2 games at launch certainly turned heads. Most notably, Mario Kart World is set to retail for a hefty $80 right out of the gate. Alongside this, Nintendo is introducing a new line of Switch 2 accessories, which have also seen a price hike compared to the original Switch offerings, with prices increasing even further since their initial announcement.
The one accessory that caught my attention was the new Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at a surprising $85. As someone who already owns multiple Switch Pro controllers, the thought of needing to purchase a new version was daunting. Fortunately, Nintendo confirmed in a developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will indeed be compatible with the Switch 2, offering some relief.
Where You Can Still Buy Switch Pro Controllers
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Not the Switch 2 version. See it at Walmart, see it at Target, or see it at Best Buy. While many gamers might be tempted to opt for the newer Switch 2 Pro controller, it's not essential for most games. If you already have a Switch Pro controller, you're in luck—you can stick with it and save that $80 for new games. For those without a Pro controller who are planning to buy the Switch 2, the standard Switch Pro controller remains a more affordable option at $69.99.
It's worth noting that these older controllers might sell out before the Switch 2 hits the market, making way for the new model. Amazon is already facing a significant stock shortage and is currently offering only third-party alternatives. In addition to the compatibility of the regular Switch Pro controller, Nintendo has confirmed that the original Joy-Con controllers will also work with the Switch 2. However, we generally recommend the Switch Pro controller over Joy-Con for most gaming experiences.
When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?
If your heart is set on the new Switch 2 Pro controller, you'll need to wait until the console's launch. The new controller will be available starting June 5, coinciding with the Switch 2's release. Preorders for the new console, and likely the official accessories, will begin on April 24. Keep in mind that the Switch 2 Pro controller will only be compatible with the Switch 2, not the original Switch.
Listings for the Switch 2 Pro controller are already popping up at Walmart and Best Buy, though without a preorder date specified. Walmart's listings also include upcoming preorders for Switch 2 games.
