Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds a New Director

Legendary Entertainment has tapped Kitao Sakurai, the creative mind behind The Eric Andre Show, to direct its upcoming Street Fighter film adaptation. This news comes via The Hollywood Reporter, and indicates a significant departure from previous iterations. Capcom's deep involvement is confirmed, with a March 20, 2026 release date already set.

This new adaptation follows previous attempts to bring the iconic fighting game franchise to the big screen, most notably the 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and the late Raul Julia. While critically panned at the time, it remains a cult classic for many.

Casting details remain under wraps, but fans can anticipate seeing familiar faces from the Street Fighter universe. The project initially saw Danny and Michael Philippou (directors of Talk to Me) attached, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests a potentially absurdist and comedic tone, a direction that some fans, particularly those who appreciate the game's more cartoonish aspects, may find exciting.

In the meantime, players can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced the new character, Mai Shiranui. A full review of Street Fighter 6 is available here.
