Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Have a New Gimmick

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: A Potential Computer Mouse Mode?

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer an unconventional function: computer mouse emulation. While the practicality of such a mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

This intriguing possibility stems from Vietnamese customs data, obtained by Famiboards user LiC, detailing shipments from a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source, previously responsible for numerous Switch 2 leaks, has yielded another potential clue.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed entries referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended for "game console handles." The "mouse soles" terminology, typically associated with computer mice, hints at a potential mouse-like functionality for the new Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These designations are absent from public component databases, suggesting they are unreleased products. The data indicates each tape piece measures 90 x 90mm, potentially large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, though trimming would likely be necessary.

Not a First for Handhelds

While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transforming into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to improve surface gliding.

The Legion GO also shares rumored Switch 2 features like magnetic controller rails. This similarity offers a possible preview of Nintendo's hybrid console evolution.
