Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team launches on the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service August 9, as announced by Nintendo today. This classic Pokémon spin-off will be accessible through the Expansion Pack plan, which grants access to a curated collection of Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Genesis games.

Initially released globally for the Game Boy Advance in 2006, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team is a spin-off roguelike where players become a human transformed into a Pokémon. Players explore dungeons and undertake missions to solve the mystery of their transformation. The game launched alongside a Blue Rescue Team version for the Nintendo DS and received a Switch remake in 2020 as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX.

Pokémon Fans Desire Mainline Games on NSO Expansion Pack

While the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack library regularly receives classic game additions, Nintendo has thus far included only Pokémon spin-offs like Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Puzzle League, disappointing some fans. Pokémon enthusiasts have requested mainline Pokémon games for the expansion pack catalog. Although Nintendo hasn't indicated adding mainline titles, such as Pokémon Red and Blue, to the expansion pack, fans have offered potential reasons.

"I'd surmise they want to guarantee there's trading and that the trading can't be abused," one fan proposed.

Pokémon Adds Another Game to the NSO Library

Along with the announcement of PMD Red Rescue Team, Nintendo also declared a special offer for renewing Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions. As part of the new Mega Multiplayer Festival, which runs until September 8, purchasing a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online membership from the eShop or My Nintendo Store will provide an extra two months of membership free of charge. The upcoming month also offers added bonuses, including extra Gold Points on game purchases made between August 5 and August 18.

Furthermore, there will be game trials of four complete multiplayer Switch titles available from August 19 to August 25, though the specific games will be revealed at a later date. Following this, the Nintendo Mega Multiplayer game sale will run from August 26 to September 8, 2024.

The Switch is poised to make its generational advance to the Switch 2 soon, as Nintendo prepares to announce the next console within the fiscal year.
