Splitgate 2: The Highly Anticipated Sequel Arrives in 2025

Splitgate 2 Announcement

1047 Games, the creators of the popular "Halo meets Portal" shooter, Splitgate, have announced a sequel launching in 2025. This new installment, Splitgate 2, promises a fresh take on the fast-paced arena shooter experience while retaining the core elements that made the original a hit.

A New Era of Portal Combat

Revealed via a cinematic trailer on July 18th, Splitgate 2 is built using Unreal Engine 5 and will remain free-to-play. CEO Ian Proulx emphasized the goal of creating a game with lasting appeal, stating their intention to build "a game that can last a decade or more." This ambition led to a re-evaluation of core mechanics, particularly the portal system, aiming for a more refined and rewarding experience for all players. Marketing Head Hilary Goldstein explained that the team "rethought our approach to portals," striving to create a balanced experience that challenges skilled players without alienating newcomers.

Splitgate 2 Gameplay Hint

While details on gameplay remain scarce, the developers confirmed a new "faction system" adding strategic depth. Expect a familiar yet entirely fresh experience; Splitgate 2 will launch on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One in 2025.

Building on a Legacy

Splitgate's success story began with a demo that garnered 600,000 downloads within a month. Its explosive popularity led to server upgrades and several years in early access before the official launch in September 2022. The decision to cease updates on the original game paved the way for Splitgate 2, promising "revolutionary, not evolutionary, changes."

Factions, Maps, and More

Splitgate 2 Factions

The trailer showcased the Sol Splitgate League and introduced three unique factions: Aeros (focused on speed), Meridian (tactical and time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). These factions add a new layer to the gameplay, but the developers confirmed Splitgate 2 will not be a hero shooter.

Splitgate 2 Gameplay Teaser

While full gameplay details are reserved for Gamescom 2024 (August 21st-25th), the trailer offered glimpses of new maps, weapons, and the return of dual-wielding.

A Deeper Dive into the Lore

Splitgate 2 Companion App

Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will provide access to comics expanding the game's lore, character cards, and even a faction quiz to help players find their perfect fit.
