Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor

Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the franchise's first open-world title, is experiencing significantly lower sales than anticipated, even falling behind 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. This underperformance has negatively impacted Ubisoft's stock prices following the August 2024 launch.

While initial reviews were positive, player feedback highlighted dissatisfaction with the game's combat and stealth mechanics. Subsequent updates aimed to address these issues, but failed to significantly boost sales. Ubisoft acknowledged the game's underperformance in September, confirming it missed sales projections.

Further compounding the issue, recent reports indicate that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, a single-player title, has outsold Star Wars Outlaws. While precise sales figures remain unavailable, Star Wars Outlaws' ranking at 47th in European sales for 2024 underscores its poor performance. This is particularly striking given Jedi: Survivor's positive reception and the release of an update expanding its platform availability.

Several factors likely contributed to this disparity. Jedi: Survivor benefited from being a sequel to the successful Jedi: Fallen Order and received overwhelmingly positive reviews upon its April 2023 release. The subsequent PS4 and Xbox One update further fueled its popularity.

Conversely, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction despite ongoing updates and DLC releases. The November release of "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, and the upcoming Spring 2025 DLC, "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune" (featuring Hondo Ohnaka), aim to revitalize interest, but their impact remains uncertain. The game's underperformance raises questions about the future of open-world Star Wars titles.
