Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, has announced a complete shift in focus to its next, unannounced project. The studio has initiated a media blackout, indicating a period of silence regarding future developments.

While Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 8 is slated for release later this year, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, confirmed via Twitter and a subsequent statement to VideoGamer that the team's full attention is dedicated to their next endeavor. Vincke's tweet expressed nostalgia for the journey with Baldur's Gate 3 but emphasized that the studio's story is far from over.

The upcoming project is confirmed to be neither a Baldur's Gate sequel nor another D&D-based title. Instead, Larian is developing an entirely original game, a decision made after internal discussions revealed a lack of enthusiasm for a direct Baldur's Gate follow-up.

Previous statements by Vincke offer limited clues. In November 2023, he hinted at the new game's groundbreaking nature. Earlier, in July 2023, he mentioned the eventual possibility of a new Divinity: Original Sin game, but emphasized that it wouldn't be the immediate focus following the release of Baldur's Gate 3.

Given Larian's established expertise in fantasy RPGs, speculation abounds regarding the nature of their next project. The possibilities range from a new fantasy setting to a foray into science fiction, a contemporary setting, or even a completely different genre.

The studio's self-imposed media silence suggests that substantial time – potentially years – will pass before any concrete details about Larian's next game are revealed.
