TouchArcade Rating:
Mobile game updates often improve optimization or compatibility. However, Capcom's recent update for Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Resident Evil Village on iOS and iPadOS introduces an unwelcome change: mandatory online DRM. The update, rolled out recently, now requires an online connection to verify your purchase before launching any of these games. This means no more offline play.
Prior to this update, all three games functioned perfectly offline. Now, launching the game triggers a purchase verification; refusing the check closes the application. While the verification is relatively quick with an internet connection, the inability to play offline is a significant drawback for many players. This forced online DRM is a negative addition to games already purchased, impacting the user experience.
Hopefully, Capcom will reconsider this approach, perhaps implementing a less intrusive purchase verification method, such as a less frequent check, rather than on every launch. This update unfortunately makes recommending Capcom's premium mobile ports more difficult.
If you haven't purchased these titles yet, free trials are available. You can find Resident Evil 7 biohazard on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS here. Resident Evil 4 Remake is available on the App Store here, and Resident Evil Village here. Read my reviews here, here, and here.
What are your thoughts on this update, especially if you own these Resident Evil games on iOS?
