Capcom's Dead Rising Returns: A Deluxe Remaster on the Horizon
Nearly a decade after the release of Dead Rising 4 in 2016, Capcom has resurrected the original Dead Rising with a remastered edition. Following the mixed reception of Dead Rising 4, and the franchise's subsequent dormancy, this announcement marks a significant return for the action-packed zombie-slaying series.
The original Dead Rising, initially an Xbox 360 exclusive (2006), received an enhanced port across major platforms in 2016, preceding Dead Rising 4. Meanwhile, Capcom focused heavily on its sister franchise, Resident Evil, delivering critically acclaimed remakes (Resident Evil 2 and 4) and new first-person installments (Resident Evil Village). This shift in focus likely explains Dead Rising's extended hiatus.
Now, eight years later, Capcom unveils "Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster," showcased in a brief YouTube trailer depicting protagonist Frank West's iconic helicopter jump. While platforms and a release date remain unannounced, a 2024 launch is highly anticipated.
Capcom's Remaster Strategy
Despite the 2016 enhancement, this remaster promises improved performance and visuals. However, this approach raises questions about potential remasters for the sequels. Given Capcom's success with Resident Evil remakes, a similar ground-up approach for Dead Rising seems less likely. The company might prioritize the proven success of Resident Evil, avoiding potential resource conflicts between two zombie-themed franchises. Nevertheless, the possibility of a Dead Rising 5 remains open.
2024 has already seen a surge in successful remasters and remakes, including Persona 3 Reload, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and others. Should Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster launch this year, it would join other Xbox 360-era remasters like Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Lollipop Chainsaw: RePOP, further highlighting the trend in revisiting classic titles.
