Nintendo enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement over recent filings that hint at the possibility of a new GameCube controller designed for use with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. According to reports from Nintendo Life, an FCC filing for a "game controller" that aligns with the Switch 2's specifications suggests it could be a wireless Bluetooth controller. Further investigation by the internet community, particularly on Famiboards, indicates that one of the images in the filing shows a label location strikingly similar to the back of a GameCube controller, right behind the C-Stick.

While it's possible this could be a new Switch 2 Pro Controller, current speculation leans toward its integration with Nintendo's Switch Online subscription service, which already supports wireless classic controllers for retro gaming. This development has sparked discussions about the potential inclusion of a GameCube library on Nintendo Switch Online. Despite long-standing demands from fans for GameCube classics on the Switch, Nintendo has so far focused on offering NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy games through its subscription service. Could the Switch 2 be the platform where GameCube makes a grand return?

Nintendo Consoles

The Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled in January with a brief trailer that confirmed several features, including backwards compatibility and an additional USB-C port. However, many details such as the full game lineup and the purpose of the mysterious new Joy-Con button remain undisclosed, though the Joy-Con mouse theory has been gaining attention.

Last month, a Nintendo patent hinted that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers might be attachable upside down. The Switch 2 is expected to incorporate gyro mechanics similar to those in smartphones, allowing for a more flexible attachment system using magnets instead of the original Switch’s rails. This change could enable players to customize button placement and other features. If implemented, this flipping feature could also introduce novel gameplay mechanics.

Analysts estimate that the Switch 2 might be priced at around $400, though some believe it could reach up to $500. June is speculated as a possible release month. Despite much still being unknown about the Switch 2, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2, promising more details about the console.

While we await further announcements, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered, currently available on the Nintendo Switch.
