Nintendo Switch 2 Patent Unveils Rotatable Joy-Cons

Authore: SavannahUpdate:Feb 24,2025

Nintendo's newly-patented Joy-Con design for the anticipated Switch 2 allows for upside-down attachment. As reported by VGC, this innovative feature leverages gyro mechanics similar to smartphone screen orientation, automatically adjusting the display regardless of controller placement.

The patent highlights the use of magnets instead of the original Switch's rails, enabling attachment on either side. This design flexibility offers players customizable button placement and port access. The potential for unique gameplay mechanics stemming from this reversible functionality is intriguing.

The patent states, "The user can use the game system by mounting the right controller and the left controller on the opposite side to the main body device," and further explains the repositioning of the audio jack for convenient headphone use.

Further details are expected at the upcoming Nintendo Direct on April 2nd (6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time). While an official release window remains unconfirmed, industry speculation points towards a launch between June and September, based on pre-release events and publisher statements.

The January reveal showcased backward compatibility and a second USB-C port, leaving many details – including new Joy-Con functionality and game lineup – shrouded in mystery. The "Joy-Con mouse" theory, however, has gained some traction.
