Development on The Outer Worlds 2 is reportedly going well, with Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart sharing insights into the development progress on their acclaimed action RPG sequel and their upcoming fantasy RPG Avowed.

Development of The Outer Worlds 2, the second installment in the space action RPG series, is progressing smoothly, according to Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart. While the studio largely remains focused on its upcoming RPG, Avowed, Urquhart assured Outer Worlds fans that the highly anticipated sequel is "going really well."

In a recent interview with Limit Break Network on YouTube, Urquhart expressed his confidence in the team working on The Outer Worlds 2. "I’m impressed with the team," he said. "We have a lot of people on that game that get it—who have worked on the first one and have been with us for a long time. So I’ve actually been really impressed by it."

Urquhart also noted the challenges the studio faced, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and after being acquired by Microsoft. Development on multiple titles, including Grounded and Pentiment at the time, stretched the team thin during that period. "We were kind of a crappy developer for about a year, year and a half," he admitted. At one point, there were talks of stopping work on The Outer Worlds 2 altogether and reallocating the team to Avowed. However, the studio ultimately decided to stick with the original plan and continue developing all the games.

"We got acquired [in 2018], and we were figuring out how to be acquired, and then Covid happens, and we're trying to get Outer Worlds done, and we're trying to get the DLC done, and we're trying to move Avowed forward, and we want to start again on Outer Worlds 2, get Outer Worlds 2 moving, and Grounded moving, and Josh is working on Pentiment," the CEO recalled.

Reflecting on the decision to push through, Urquhart noted how both Grounded and Pentiment "turned out amazing" and shared that Avowed is "looking fantastic," and The Outer Worlds 2 is "looking incredible." No further details were shared regarding actual game content, however with Avowed pushed back to 2025, we speculate that similar adjustments will be made to Obsidian's other projects.

The Outer Worlds 2 was first announced in 2021, but there have been few to no updates since then. Urquhart acknowledged this, as well as the prospect of a launch delay happening to the game, just as it had with Avowed. Regardless, the CEO said that the studio is committed to delivering excellent games. "We will get there with all these games," he said. "Are they going to be on the timelines that we originally thought? No. But we’re going to get there, and I think that’s been proven now." Both games are expected to be available on the PC and Xbox Series S/X.
