What Is the Pokemon GO Tour Pass? New Free Progression Feature, Explained

The new Pokémon GO Tour Pass: A closer look at the free and paid options.

With Niantic's recent announcements of in-game tickets and passes, many Pokémon GO players immediately want to know the cost. The new Pokémon GO Tour Pass, however, is a surprising free offering – but what exactly does it entail?

What is the Pokémon GO Tour Pass?

Introduced with the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova global event, the Tour Pass is a system of completing tasks to earn Tour Points. These points unlock rewards, boost rank, and enhance event bonuses during the Unova event.

The standard Tour Pass is free and automatically awarded to players upon the event's commencement on February 24th at 10 AM local time. A paid version, the Tour Pass Deluxe, is also available for $14.99 USD (or local equivalent). This grants an immediate encounter with Victini, improved rewards, and faster progression through the Tour Pass tiers.

Earning and Utilizing Tour Points

Tour Points are earned through familiar in-game activities like catching Pokémon, participating in raids, and hatching eggs. Daily Pass Tasks provide additional points.

Accumulating Tour Points unlocks rewards, increases rank within the Tour Pass tiers, and boosts Catch XP bonuses. These bonuses scale with rank:

  • 1.5x Catch XP at Tier 2
  • 2x Catch XP at Tier 3
  • 3x Catch XP at Tier 4

While Niantic hasn't revealed all rewards, the free Tour Pass culminates in a Zorua encounter with a special background. The Tour Pass Deluxe offers a different final reward: a Lucky Trinket.

Understanding the Lucky Trinket

The Lucky Trinket, the ultimate reward of the Tour Pass Deluxe, is a single-use item. It magically transforms a friend (at least Great Friends level) into a Lucky Friend, enabling a Lucky Pokémon trade without requiring Best Friend status. Note that Lucky Trinkets obtained during GO Tour: Unova expire on March 9, 2025.
