The latest Pokémon TCG set, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals, was fully unveiled on March 24 and is set to launch starting May 30, 2025. As with many high-profile releases, the launch window has been chaotic, with scalpers and store issues complicating the pre-order process for fans.
Destined Rivals is generating significant buzz for a few key reasons. Firstly, it brings back the beloved Trainer's Pokémon cards, reminiscent of classics like Brock's Sandslash and Rocket's Mewtwo. These cards creatively integrate iconic Trainers with their Pokémon, much to the delight of long-time collectors. Additionally, the set focuses on Team Rocket, a fan-favorite antagonistic group from the first generation of Pokémon games, further fueling excitement and demand.

When pre-orders opened, the Pokémon Center website was overwhelmed, leaving many fans unable to secure an Elite Trainer Box (ETB). These boxes, which typically retail for $54.99, were quickly listed on online marketplaces like eBay at inflated prices reaching several hundred dollars. This scalping issue was highlighted by Joe Merrick of Serebii, who expressed his frustration with the commercialization of the hobby, saying, "I truly hate this. The way almost all Pokemon TCG content has shifted to financial. The way that people just treat it as investment. The way people just want to flip it. It's disgusting. Shame on all involved."
Unfortunately, this situation is not unique to Destined Rivals. Previous sets like Prismatic Evolutions and the Blooming Waters 151 box also faced similar shortages and scalping issues. The Pokémon Company has acknowledged the problem, stating that more inventory of the Destined Rivals ETB will be available later this year. However, some fans have reported that their pre-orders are being cancelled, adding to the frustration.
The high demand and scarcity of physical products have impacted the enjoyment of the Pokémon TCG for many enthusiasts who simply want to enjoy the game. While alternatives like Pokémon TCG Pocket provide a digital solution, the struggle to obtain physical cards remains a significant issue. Visiting local stores often reveals the extent of the problem, with popular sets quickly selling out. As exciting as these releases are, the ongoing challenges highlight the need for better solutions to ensure fans can enjoy the hobby without such hurdles.
