Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool and Wolverine, is reportedly in talks to helm a new Star Wars film, with Ryan Gosling potentially starring. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that negotiations are underway to secure Gosling for the lead role. Levy has been developing this project since 2022, with a screenplay completed last year. He's collaborating again with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter for This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project.
Plot details remain under wraps, but it's confirmed the film will be a standalone story, unrelated to the Skywalker Saga, and likely not part of a larger trilogy. Gosling's potential involvement has reportedly expedited the production timeline. Levy was previously attached to direct a boy band movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, but the Star Wars project may now take precedence, with filming potentially beginning this fall.
The Star Wars franchise is currently in a period of transition. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Skeleton Crew recently concluded its run on Disney+. On the film front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie wrapped production in December, slated for release on May 22, 2026. A new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey is also in the works.
A release date for Levy's Star Wars film is yet to be announced.
