Steam, the premier digital game distribution platform for PC gamers, has shattered its concurrent user record once again, surpassing 40 million players simultaneously online for the first time. This milestone was reached over the weekend, coinciding with the launch of Monster Hunter Wilds on February 28, 2025. The platform recorded an unprecedented 40,270,997 concurrent users, eclipsing its prior record of 39.9 million set in February 2025.
According to SteamDB, a resource that tracks Steam's metrics, the platform has been breaking its concurrent user record almost monthly since May 2024. The peak has impressively escalated from 35.5 million to 40.2 million users within just over six months. While this count includes users who are idle—those with Steam open but not actively playing—the number of users engaged in gameplay has also set a new high, increasing from 12.5 million to 12.8 million.
Steam has seen consistent surges in player peaks throughout 2024, with records broken twice in March and again in July. The latest peak is likely attributed to the release of Monster Hunter Wilds, which itself achieved a 24-hour concurrent user peak of 1.38 million. However, other titles also contributed significantly, with Counter-Strike 2 reaching 1.7 million concurrent users, and PUBG, Dota 2, and Marvel Rivals registering impressive peaks of 819,541, 657,780, and 268,283 users, respectively.
Despite its popularity, Monster Hunter Wilds has garnered a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam. In response, Capcom has released official guidance to address PC performance issues. Additionally, Capcom has unveiled preliminary information about Monster Hunter Wilds Title Update 1, which will introduce an endgame social hub.
