Application Description

Unlock the potential of your device as a versatile portable display for cameras, gaming consoles, laptops, PCs, or other devices with HDMI output. To achieve this, you'll need an HDMI to USB C dongle, also known as a UVC capture device or Video Capture Card. Note that this is distinct from a USB C hub or a USB C to HDMI cable. Additionally, cameras, endoscopes, and microscopes with USB streaming capabilities are fully supported.

Noir is your go-to app, supporting UVC video streaming and UAC audio streaming, with the flexibility to choose between OpenGL ES and Vulkan for your graphics backend. The free version provides a basic yet immersive experience, though it includes ads (not present in the preview). For an ad-free experience and additional advanced features, consider upgrading to the pro version, which also helps fund the continuous development and maintenance of Noir.

Common Use Cases

  1. Camera Monitor: The pro version includes advanced features such as LUTs, Histogram, and Edge Detection, enhancing your monitoring capabilities.
  2. Primary Monitor for Gaming Console & PC: Enjoy pro features like Visual Effects, Brightness & Contrast Adjustment, App-specific Volume Control, and FSR 1.0 for an optimized gaming experience.
  3. Secondary Monitor for Laptop: Extend your workspace effortlessly.
  4. Compatibility: Noir works seamlessly with any device featuring HDMI Output or USB Streaming.

FAQ

  1. Why doesn't Noir recognize my device?
Your device may not support USB Host (OTG), or you might be using a device other than a Video Capture Card. In some instances, additional power via a USB hub might be required for the capture card to function.

  2. Why is the preview so laggy?
Lag often stems from the USB version. For USB 3.0 capture cards, ensure both your cable and the USB port on your device are USB 3.0. For USB 2.0, use MJPEG video format and stick to 1080p30fps or lower. Some cards can handle up to 1080p50fps.

  3. Why did my capture card, which was working fine, suddenly fail to connect?
System issues are usually the culprit. A simple restart of your device can often resolve this.

  4. Why does my gaming console or video playback device show a black screen when connected?
This is common with PS5 and PS4 due to HDCP being enabled. Disable HDCP in the PS console settings: Settings > System > HDMI. PS3 does not allow HDCP to be turned off. Other devices may also enable HDCP when playing videos. While some HDMI splitters can bypass HDCP, this solution is not recommended here.

  5. Why are resolutions other than 16:9 and 4:3 not supported?
Currently, no capture cards support other aspect ratios. Noir's Stretch feature can help, provided your capture card's EDID and the output resolution of your device are set correctly.
