Khmer Traditional Board Game: Ouk Chaktrang

The first type of Khmer chess game, cherished by Cambodians, is called Ouk Chaktrang (អុកចត្រង្គ). The term "Ouk" is believed to originate from the sound produced when a chess piece is moved on the board during a check. In the context of the game, "Ouk" signifies a check, and it's a rule that the player must announce it loudly when checking the opponent's King.

The game's formal name, "Chaktrang," has roots in the Indian Sanskrit word Chaturanga (चतुरङ्ग), reflecting its historical ties to ancient Indian chess. Similar to international chess, Ouk Chaktrang is played between two players, yet a distinctive feature in Cambodia is that games often involve two teams, adding an extra layer of excitement and entertainment to the matches. Cambodian men frequently gather to play at local barbershops or men's cafes in their towns or villages.

The primary objective of Chaktrang, like other chess variants, is to checkmate the opponent's King. At the start of the game, the first move is determined by mutual agreement between the players. In subsequent games, the player who lost the previous match typically has the privilege of moving first. If the initial game ends in a draw, the decision on who moves first in the next game is once again settled by mutual agreement.

The Second Type: Rek

The second type of Cambodian chess game is known as Rek. For a detailed understanding of Rek, please see the Rek game section.
