"Breakout Beyond: A Fresh Twist on Atari's Classic"

Authore: JulianUpdate:Apr 16,2025

The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set for a modern revival with Breakout Beyond, a fresh take on Atari's classic brick-breaker. While retaining the familiar paddle-and-ball mechanics, this new iteration introduces a unique twist: the gameplay progresses sideways, moving from left to right.

Developed by Choice Provisions, the creative minds behind the BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond maintains the core objective of breaking bricks. As players build combos, the game's visuals and effects become increasingly dynamic, enhancing the excitement. Special bricks trigger spectacular effects, from massive explosions to deploying an actual laser cannon, adding layers of strategy and thrill to the gameplay.

With 72 meticulously designed levels, Breakout Beyond offers a substantial challenge. For those seeking endless fun, the game includes an unlockable endless mode complete with an online global leaderboard to compete against players worldwide. Additionally, for those who enjoy gaming with friends, Breakout Beyond supports local two-player co-op, making it a great option for social gaming sessions.

Originally slated to be an exclusive title for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development took a new direction when Atari decided to acquire and complete the game. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."

The Intellivision Amico, initially announced in 2018 with a hopeful 2020 release, has faced numerous delays and setbacks. Although Atari acquired the branding and rights to Intellivision last year, the Amico itself remains unreleased. However, fans of Breakout won't have to wait long, as Breakout Beyond is set to launch later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
