Peacekeeper and Suicide Squad are Canon
James Gunn confirmed the canonicity of "The Peacemaker" series starring John Cena, except for the cameo in Zack Snyder's Justice League. The show's events were referenced by John Economos, an ARGUS agent and Amanda Waller's sidekick, who also appeared in the animated series. Additionally, Peacemaker himself made an appearance, further solidifying the connection. The first episode of "Monster Commandos" also established "The Suicide Squad" as part of the canon.
Themyscira, Bloodhaven, Star City, Gotham, and Metropolis
The series introduced several iconic DC locations. The witch Cerci hails from Themyscira, home of Wonder Woman. Dr. Phosphorus, once a criminal in Gotham, was captured by Batman. The Galaxy Broadcasting System (GBS), based in Metropolis, employed Clark Kent and Lois Lane. Dr. Phosphorus's wife is from Bialia, ruled by Queen Bee, the origin of Blue Beetle's powers. A soldier mentioned serving with Rick Flag Senior in Jharkhanpur, home to villain Ram Khan. Bloodhaven, Nightwing's town, and Star City, Green Arrow's hometown, were also referenced, with the latter being the origin of Mermaid (Nina Mazursky).
Sgt. Rock and Easy Company
Episode 3 revealed that G.I. Robot fought alongside Sgt. Rock and his Easy Company during World War II. Sgt. Rock, a non-superhero and one of DC's most popular characters, first appeared in the 1959 comic "Our Army at War." There's buzz that Daniel Craig might portray him in an upcoming movie, with Maury Sterling voicing him in the series.
Dr. Will Magnus
In the same episode, Dr. Will Magnus studied G.I. Robot. Known for creating the Metal Men, a team of androids named after elements from the Mendeleev table, Magnus's inclusion ties into the broader DC universe.
Class Z Villains from the DC
The series showcased various odd villains in Argus prison cells, including Class Z villains from old DC comics. Characters like Animal-Plant-Mineral Man, Bloody Millipede, Shaggy-Man, Fisherman, Congorilla, Nosferata, Khalis, Kemo, and Egg-Fu appeared, adding depth to the universe.
James Gunn mentioned that the animators and co-showrunner Dean Laurie had creative freedom in choosing who sat at the prison tables.
Weasels' Lawyer
Elizabeth Bates, Weasels' lawyer, is a reimagining of the 1940s comic character Betty Bates, known for her dual role in fighting crime both in and out of the courtroom. Her character adds a unique flavor to the series, reminiscent of Daredevil but with her own flair.
Justice League and Other DC Heroes
Episode 4 featured a significant cameo scene where Cerci showed Amanda Waller visions of a dystopian future. James Gunn confirmed the presence of Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl, Supergirl, Booster Gold, and Robin (Damien Wayne), among others added by the animators and identified by fans.
Gunn also expressed interest in further exploring Blue Beetle, hinting at potential future projects.
Clayface
In episode five, it was revealed that Dr. Ailsa McPherson was killed and replaced by Clayface, a notorious Batman villain. Alan Tudyk, who voiced Dr. Phosphorus and Will Magnus, also lends his voice to Clayface, enjoying the contrast between his roles in different DC series. A new movie, "Clayface," with a screenplay by Mike Flanagan, has been announced, sparking speculation about Tudyk's involvement.
First Look at Batman in the New DC Cinematic Universe
Episode six delved into the origins of Dr. Phosphorus, involving Gotham crime boss Rupert Thorne. The villain's capture by Batman provided the first glimpse of the Dark Knight in this new universe, setting the stage for future narratives.
New Creature Commandos
The season finale introduced a new lineup for the Creature Commandos led by Bride, including King Shark (voiced by Diedrich Bader), Dr. Phosphorus, Weasel, the upgraded G.I. Robot, Nosferata, and Khalis. This development leaves fans eagerly awaiting Season 2 and the upcoming Superman movie, further expanding the new DC Cinematic Universe.
