Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved Baldur's Gate sequel. According to CEO Swen Vincke, a playable prototype of a BG3 follow-up existed, but the team ultimately decided against further development.

A Playable BG3 Sequel Was Abandoned

In a PC Gamer interview, Vincke stated that while a playable version of the game (potentially Baldur's Gate 4) was created, the team felt the project, despite its potential appeal, required extensive further work. The prospect of spending another three years on a similar D&D title led to the decision to pursue new, original projects.

The Decision to Move On

The choice to abandon the project, including planned BG3 DLC, was driven by a desire to explore fresh creative avenues. Vincke emphasized the positive impact this decision had on team morale, creating a sense of liberation and excitement for upcoming, currently unannounced projects. The studio is now focused on two new titles, described by Vincke as their most ambitious yet.

Future Projects and Speculation

Larian’s history with the Divinity series hints at the possibility of a new entry. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 isn't confirmed, Vincke suggests a different direction for the franchise. Meanwhile, Baldur's Gate 3 will receive a final major patch in Fall 2024, including mod support, cross-play, and new endings. The future for Larian Studios, however, rests firmly on these unannounced, original projects.
