Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer and other Fallout developers are eager to return to the franchise, but only under the right conditions. Their enthusiasm hinges on the opportunity to explore fresh creative avenues.
Creative Freedom: The Key Factor
In a YouTube Q&A, Sawyer expressed his willingness to helm another Fallout game, but stressed the importance of creative freedom. He emphasized that the project's appeal depends heavily on the creative boundaries set: "What are we doing? What are the boundaries? What am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?" He clarified that restrictive limitations would make the project unappealing.
This sentiment was echoed by Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, who expressed interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster. In an interview with The Gamer, Cain highlighted the need for novelty: "Every RPG I've ever made offered me something new...If someone came to me and said, 'You want to make a Fallout game?' My answer is 'Well, what's new?'"
Obsidian's Perspective
Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart also shared his desire to develop another Fallout title, but confirmed in a January 2023 Game Pressure interview that there were no current plans. He cited Obsidian's busy schedule with projects like Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2 as the reason. While he expressed hope for a future Fallout project before retirement, he acknowledged that it remains uncertain.
In short, the possibility of a new Fallout game from key developers rests on the promise of innovative gameplay and design, not just a simple reiteration of past successes.
