Debunking the Soulslike Label: Difficulty Options and Gameplay Vision

Phantom Blade Zero Playtime Estimated to be 20-30 Hours with Adjustable Difficulty

Phantom Blade Zero will offer four difficulty levels: Easy, Ordinary, Difficult, and Extremely Difficult. While its visuals and combat initially drew comparisons to Soulslike games, the inclusion of adjustable difficulty sets it apart. Game Director Soulframe clarified on Twitter that the game isn't designed to be a Soulslike, aiming instead for "combo-driven, heart-pumping combat that is hectic, rewarding, and exhilarating."

The game's dark aesthetic and challenging boss fights did inspire Soulslike comparisons, but Soulframe confirmed that the inspiration ends with the multi-layered maps and multiple approach paths. He described the gameplay as a blend of "Ninja Gaiden Combat on a Souls Game Map," combining fast-paced action with extensive exploration.

Recent interviews revealed further details: Players can choose from over 30 primary and 20 secondary weapons, each with unique combat properties. Expect a 20-30 hour main story campaign, complemented by an additional 20-30 hours of side content.

Boss battles feature at least two phases, with a convenient restart option from the second phase if you fall in the second phase. A "Li Wulin" mode lets you rematch defeated bosses, potentially unlocking hidden challenges. A mysterious mechanic is said to influence the game's ending, hinting at multiple possible conclusions.
