The PS5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including PlayStation Direct and Amazon, for its standard price of $79.99. However, given past trends, this limited restock is unlikely to last.
The scarcity stems from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020 and, more recently, the PS5 Pro in November 2024. Neither the Pro nor the Digital Edition includes a built-in disc drive, forcing users who want to play physical media to purchase the drive separately. This has created significant demand, particularly in the US, where supply has been consistently low for months.
While Amazon and PlayStation Direct currently offer the drive at MSRP, a third-party seller on Walmart is offering it at a 50% markup ($122). Stock at this reseller is extremely limited. PlayStation Direct is also implementing its usual one-per-customer purchase limit to deter scalpers.
