Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has recently canceled an incubation project, leading to layoffs of an unspecified number of staff members involved in the project. The news was initially reported by Insider Gaming, referencing a now-deleted LinkedIn post by a former production coordinator who mentioned being part of the project for the past year before its cancellation.
IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced project, which was a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS). This project was initiated by a team previously working on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, a source described the number as "small." Additionally, at least one individual connected to the project has confirmed on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.
This development is part of a broader pattern of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring at Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. That year, EA cut 50 jobs at BioWare and an unknown number at Codemasters. Nearly a year later, the company announced the layoff of 670 employees and the termination of several projects, including the Star Wars FPS at Respawn, affecting around two dozen Respawn employees. Subsequent to these cuts, EA restructured BioWare, shifting developers to other internal projects and laying off additional key staff members.
IGN has sought a statement from Electronic Arts regarding these developments.
