Sony Cutting PS4 Games from PlayStation Plus Next Year

Authore: ThomasUpdate:Mar 16,2025

Sony is phasing out PlayStation 4 games from its PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and Games Catalog starting January 2026, focusing solely on PlayStation 5 titles. This shift, announced alongside February 2025's PlayStation Plus monthly games, reflects a change in strategy. The PlayStation Blog post explains that while PS4 games will no longer be a core benefit, they may be offered occasionally. Existing downloads remain unaffected, and Games Catalog titles will stay accessible until their scheduled removal. Sony assures subscribers that PlayStation Plus will continue to evolve, emphasizing benefits like exclusive discounts, online multiplayer, and cloud saves. The company's focus is now on expanding its PS5 game offerings.

With the PS4's launch in 2013 and the PS5's in 2020, over a decade has passed since the PS4's release, and more than four years since the PS5. Sony cites a player shift towards PS5 gaming as the reason for this change, noting increased PS5 title redemption.

The future of PS4 games within the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog remains unannounced; any potential changes will likely be revealed closer to the implementation date.
