The previous generation Sony XM4 was already an outstanding headphone, but the XM5 introduces key improvements in noise cancellation and comfort. It features a second processor and double the number of microphones dedicated to filtering out ambient noise. The redesigned earcups fit more snugly on the ear, creating a better seal and thus enhancing passive noise isolation. The noise cancellation in the XM5 is markedly superior to that of the XM4 and nearly any other noise-canceling headset in its price range.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 also boasts a sleeker redesign with a new style of headband adjustment. The band is wider than before, improving weight distribution, and the earcup padding is now made of a luxurious synthetic leather material that's softer and more comfortable. These headphones can be worn for hours with ease. However, one minor drawback is that the XM5 can no longer be folded inward, only swiveled, making it less compact.
