Ubisoft has celebrated yet another milestone for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, revealing that the game has now reached 2 million players since its launch on March 20. This impressive figure marks a significant increase from the 1 million players reported on the game's first day. Ubisoft proudly stated that this achievement has surpassed the launch numbers of both Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey, expressing gratitude to fans with the message, "Thank you for joining the journey in Feudal Japan!"

PlayWhile Ubisoft has not yet disclosed specific sales figures for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the game has already claimed the top spot on Steam. This is particularly noteworthy as Ubisoft recently returned to Steam after years of exclusivity on the Epic Games Store for their PC launches. At the time of writing, Assassin’s Creed Shadows had reached a peak of 58,894 concurrent players on Steam, securing a position within the top 30 most-played games on the platform. This number is expected to climb further over the opening weekend, potentially surpassing the all-time Steam peak player counts of Assassin’s Creed Origins (41,551) and Odyssey (62,069).

For context, BioWare’s single-player RPG, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, launched on Steam on October 31, 2024, and achieved a peak of 89,418 players. However, it's important to note that the true concurrent peak for Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be significantly higher, considering its launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S as well. Unfortunately, neither Sony nor Microsoft publicly share player numbers.

The Complete Assassin's Creed Timeline

25 ImagesAssassin’s Creed Shadows faces immense global pressure to succeed for Ubisoft, following multiple delays and the commercial disappointment of last year’s Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft has endured a series of high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations leading up to the release of Assassin's Creed Shadows. The situation became so dire that the Guillemot family and Ubisoft's largest shareholder have reportedly been in discussions with Tencent and other investors about a potential buyout to maintain control of the company.

The game itself has not been without controversy, particularly in Japan. This week, IGN confirmed that Ubisoft released a day-one patch for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which addressed concerns from some Japanese politicians regarding the depiction of in-game temples and shrines. In a notable exchange, Japanese politician Hiroyuki Kada raised the issue in an official government meeting, prompting a response from Japan’s Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba.
