Plague Inc. Sequel Launches at Budget Price

After Inc., the sequel to Plague Inc., launches at a daring $2 price point, a move that has its developer, James Vaughn of Ndemic Creations, expressing some apprehension. This article delves into the reasoning behind this risky pricing strategy.

A Gamble in a Saturated Mobile Market

Released on November 28th, 2024, After Inc. presents a less bleak, more affordable alternative to its predecessors. However, Vaughn, in an interview with Game File, voiced concerns about the mobile gaming market's heavy saturation with free-to-play games laden with microtransactions. Despite these doubts, the team's confidence rests on the established success of Plague Inc. and Rebel Inc.

Vaughn stated, "The only reason we can even consider releasing a premium game is because we have our existing juggernauts of Plague Inc. and Rebel Inc., which will help players find our games – and also show that there is still an appetite for intelligent, sophisticated strategy games on mobile. If we didn't have Plague Inc. to help – I think any game, no matter how good it is, would really struggle to get noticed."

The developers have pledged a commitment to players, promising all purchased content will remain accessible without further cost. The App Store listing explicitly states "no consumable microtransactions" and highlights "Expansion Packs are buy once, play forever."

Currently, After Inc. holds a strong position in the App Store's Top Paid Games category, ranking 5th, closely trailing Plague Inc. and Stardew Valley. It also boasts a 4.77 out of 5 rating on Google Play. A Steam early access version, titled After Inc. Revival, is slated for release in 2025, expanding the game's reach to PC gamers.

What Awaits in After Inc.?

After Inc. is a compact 4X grand strategy and simulation game where players rebuild human civilization after the Plague Inc. catastrophe. Players establish multiple settlements across a post-apocalyptic, yet vibrant, United Kingdom, utilizing salvaged resources from ruins to construct and maintain thriving communities. The game features various buildings, including farms and lumberyards, and emphasizes resource management and citizen well-being. Players choose from five leaders (ten in the Steam version), each possessing unique abilities.

The challenge, however, extends beyond rebuilding. Zombies pose a constant threat, requiring players to clear them out to secure resources and expand. Vaughn assures players, "Nothing that can’t be solved with some nails stuck in a cricket bat!"
