Sony addressed the nearly day-long PlayStation Network (PSN) outage this past weekend, attributing it to an unspecified "operational issue" in a social media statement. The company offered no further explanation of the cause or preventative measures.
To compensate PlayStation Plus subscribers, Sony will automatically add five extra days to their subscriptions.
Gamers experienced widespread disruptions throughout the outage, with over one-third unable to log in and others reporting server crashes.
The PSN account requirement, even for single-player PC games, has drawn criticism from players, and this outage highlights those concerns.
This isn't the first major PSN disruption. The April 2011 data breach resulted in over 20 days of connectivity problems. While less severe, the recent outage has left PS5 users frustrated by Sony's lack of detailed communication regarding the incident.
